What is Overtime?

Overtime is additional time that an employee works beyond their scheduled working hours.

Overtime rules vary from company to company depending on the job description, company policy, and the additional hours worked.

How to Calculate Overtime Pay?

Steps to calculate overtime pay:

  1. Multiply the regular rate by the company's overtime multiplier
  2. Multiply the resulting number by the number of additional hours worked.

Mathematically:

Overtime Pay = Additional Hours Worked * Overtime Rate

Example (Overtime):

If a person earns an hourly wage of $23 and works 5 hours more than the normal working hours (8 hours), his overtime pay would be:

Overtime Pay = Additional Hours Worked * Overtime Rate

Overtime pay = 5 * $23

Overtime pay = $115

Based on his regular and overtime pay, a person's gross daily wage is

Gross Salary = Regular Salary + Overtime

Gross Salary = $184 + $115

Gross Salary = $299

Other Important Terms:

One and a half hours:

One and a half hours refers to overtime pay, which is 1.5 times the employee's regular rate of pay.

One and a half hours = Standard working hours * 1.5

Doubling Time:

Double time occurs when overtime hours are exceeded. When an employee works more than 10 or 15 hours per week, he/she is assigned double the rate of pay.

Double Time = Regular Pay Rate * 2

Released Status:

Exempt status defines a job description in which an individual's salary is not reduced due to fewer hours worked. In an organization, employees with exempt status typically hold administrative or managerial positions.

Such employees are not covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and are also exempt from overtime pay.
